The Plain-English Dictionary

Every AI word, explained simply.

The #1 source of "feeling stupid" is the words. Here's every term you'll run into — no jargon, no assumptions.

AI (Artificial Intelligence)

Software that learns patterns from lots of information so it can answer questions or do tasks.

LLM (Large Language Model)

The "brain" behind chat tools; it's read enormous amounts of text and predicts helpful words.

Prompt

What you type to the AI. Your instruction or question.

Hallucination

When AI confidently gives a wrong answer. Always double-check important facts.

Agent

An AI that doesn't just answer, but actually does the task for you, start to finish.

Token

A small chunk of text (roughly a word-part) that AI reads and counts.

Chatbot

An AI that talks with you — you type a question, it types an answer. It advises but doesn't act.

Pattern-matcher

The simplest honest description of today's AI: it finds patterns in what it's read and predicts what comes next.

Model

The trained software itself — the thing that has "studied" the data and can now answer questions.

Training data

The books, articles, and web pages an AI studied to learn its patterns.

Deepfake

A fake video or audio clip made by AI, often imitating a real person's face or voice.

Inference

The moment the AI generates an answer from your prompt — the "thinking" part, even though it's really just calculating.
